Polaroids

Polaroids have become an industry standard in the modelling world because they show agencies and clients what you naturally look like without heavy styling or editing. They help showcase your features, proportions, and overall presence in the most authentic way possible.

Traditionally, model Polaroids include:

• Natural hair and minimal or no makeup

• Simple fitted clothing, often jeans and a plain top

• Front, side, and full-length poses

• Neutral lighting and plain backgrounds

• Little to no retouching

These images help agencies, designers, and casting directors assess how versatile and photogenic a model is before booking them for editorials, fashion campaigns, runway shows, or commercial work.

The phrase “Polaroids” was coined from the use of Polaroid Corporation instant cameras, which became widely used in the fashion industry during the 1970s and 1980s. Agencies would quickly photograph models using Polaroid cameras because the images developed instantly, making them convenient for castings, portfolios, and agency records.

Even though the industry now uses digital cameras, the term “Polaroids” is still commonly used today as industry shorthand for natural, unedited digitals or casting photos. Some agencies also refer to them as “digitals,” but “Polaroids” remains the more traditional fashion industry term.
